Peach Fritters

Photography by Jim Bathie and John O’Hagan

Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, these Peach Fritters make the perfect way to savor fresh summer peaches. Juicy chopped peaches are folded into a warmly spiced batter, then fried to golden perfection and tossed in a sweet cinnamon-sugar coating. Ideal for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon treat, this easy fritter recipe brings out the best of seasonal fruit in every bite.

Peach Fritters

  • 1⅔ cups self-rising flour
  • ¾ cup sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup whole buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more for frying
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups chopped fresh peaches
  1. Line a large baking sheet with paper towels.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, ¼ cup sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Make a well in center. Add buttermilk, egg, oil, and vanilla; stir until moistened. Stir in peaches.
  3. In a large Dutch oven, pour oil to a depth of 2 inches, and heat over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350°.
  4. Working in batches, using a 1½-tablespoon spring-loaded scoop, carefully drop batter into hot oil. Fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through center, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from oil using a slotted spoon, and let drain on prepared pan.
  5. In another large bowl, whisk together remaining ½ cup sugar and remaining ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Toss warm fritters in sugar mixture. Serve warm.
